BRAZIL: Where Hunger Steals a Child’s Future

By Send Relief Staff

Along the Andirá River in the Brazilian Amazon, the effects of hunger are hard to ignore.

Children are smaller than they should be. Their energy fades quickly. Growth is slow.

In these remote Sateré-Mawé communities, families are doing what they can. But access to food is a huge barrier. Some villages are more than 12 hours by boat from the nearest city. What children need most is often too far away, too expensive, or too inconsistent to rely on.

And they feel it early.

Children showing signs of malnutrition are brought into ongoing care. Every month, they are seen, measured, and cared for by Send Relief ministry partners and local believers as their bodies begin to recover. They receive eggs for protein, vitamins, anti-parasite medicine, and, when needed, formula to help them grow stronger.

Mothers walk closely through the process. They receive practical guidance and support, and pregnant women are cared for as well, helping give children a stronger start from the very beginning.

It is steady, intentional work.

And through that intentionality, something more is beginning to take shape.

In one village along the river, local leaders are building a chicken farm. What began with a few hundred hens will soon provide a steady supply of eggs, one of the most effective sources of nutrition for growing children.

For the first time, families will have consistent access to protein right where they live.

And it does not stop there.

Because this community has already been reached with the gospel, local believers plan to go to other Sateré-Mawé villages, teaching families how to raise chickens while also sharing the hope of Jesus in their own language.

What once depended on outside help is becoming something local, sustainable, and multiplying.

And for the children here, that means more than full stomachs. It means the chance to grow, to learn, and to step into the future with strength.

This is what your generosity makes possible:

  • You help children receive the nutrition their bodies need to grow and thrive.
  • You help mothers care for their children with the support and resources they have been missing.
  • You help bring sustainable solutions to communities that have long been out of reach.

Most importantly, you help compassion open the door for sharing the gospel.

August 23 is Global Hunger Sunday.

This is your chance to help children access the nourishment and hope they need. Your gift equips missionaries and partner ministries to meet urgent needs and share lasting hope through simple, powerful acts of compassion.

Give help and hope today.
